Attached is a copy of my recently completed pastel of two young girls on roller skates sourced from a black-and-white photograph I shot in my hometown of Tunkhannock, Pa., about 50 years ago for a art class at Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre.
Some fun facts about roller skating and roller skates.
• You can burn more than 600 calories during a leisurely hour of roller skating.
• No surprise perhaps, but the majority of roller skating injuries involve the wrist.
• Speed skaters often install hollow rollers on their skates to reduce weight.
• The largest parade of roller skaters? It took place in Paris on June 15, 2008, with 1188 participants who skated for 12.68 miles.
• Paris-based label Yves Saint Laurent sold the most expensive skates ever, a pair of high heels with wheels, priced at $2,600.
• Also in France, a police unit of nine inline skaters patrolled Paris during 2024 Olympic Games.
• The longest distance covered on roller skates is 5,341.3 mi, achieved by Peter Bögelein of Germany. He departed Würzburg, Germany, on June 1, 1986, and returned there on September 16, 1986.
• Ronald Reagan declared October as National Roller Skating Month in 1983.
